Tattoo Shop Names Ideas

When coming up with a name for a traditional tattoo shop or studio, there are several sources of inspiration you can draw from. Such as words related to the art of tattooing itself, starting with the most common one being ‘ink’, to ‘needle’, or ‘skin’.

You could also draw inspiration from the rich history and symbolism often associated with tattoos. Here’s a good read about the history of american tattoos.

Location can also be a source of inspiration, particularly if your shop is in an area with a unique name or character.

Also, don’t forget to include words that explain the atmosphere or experience of your shop, such as ‘parlor’, ‘lounge’ ,’den’, or ‘studio’.

Guide to Choosing Tattoo Shop Names that Fit Your Brand

Your tattoo parlor’s name will help you attract the right clientele, and hopefully differentiate you from competitors.

Let’s be real. Choosing the right name for your tattoo shop is not something to be taken lightly, however I don’t expect you to spend months trying to find the perfect name either.

This is why, in the next part of this article, I will share with you the process me and my team follow to come up with great names for our clients, including other tattoo studios like yours. I can assure you that if you follow this same process you will be able to come up with cool and catchy name for your tattoo shop in the same time it takes to sketch that broken heart tattoo 🙂.

Understanding Your Market

Before you start brainstorming names for your tattoo shop, we recommend conducting some market research. This will help you understand who your competitors are and what they offer.

Look at their names, branding strategies, and how they communicate their unique selling propositions (USPs).

This will give you a sense of what works in your market and help you identify gaps that your tattoo studio can fill.

Who are Your Target Customers?

Considering your target audience is crucial when choosing a name for your tattoo parlor. It should resonate with them and reflect the kind of work you do.

Knowing your market will be key to your success as a tattoo artist and this practice starts as early as choosing the right name.

For example, if you focus on traditional styles, choose a name that reflects that. If you specialize in custom designs, think of something unique that will attract attention. The name should give customers an idea of what they’ll find inside.

So, start by researching the demographics and preferences of your potential customers. Look at age, gender, interests, and lifestyles. Are you aiming for a trendy and youthful clientele or a more mature and sophisticated crowd? Men or Women?

Tailor the name to attract these types of clients.

Defining Your Brand

Your tattoo shop’s name should be a reflection of your brand. Therefore, before you start thinking about names, you need to define your brand.

To define your brand you need to answer the following questions:

  • What are your values?
  • What kind of tattoo art do you specialize in?
  • What is your unique selling proposition?
  • What kind of experience do you want to offer your clients?

Your brand is more than just your logo or your shop’s name, it’s the total experience your customers will get when they visit your tattoo shop. From the initial consultation to the finished tattoo.

Your brand messaging should be clear, consistent, and reflective of the services you offer.

Brainstorming Your Tattoo Shop Name

Now that you have a clear understanding of your market and your brand, you can start brainstorming names for your tattoo parlor.

Here are some tips to help you generate creative and meaningful name ideas.

Use Tattoo-Related Words: Consider using words related to the tattoo industry. This could be tools you use, popular tattoo styles, or even historical or cultural references to the art of tattooing.

Incorporate Your Specialty: If you specialize in a particular style of tattoo art, consider incorporating this into your name. This can immediately communicate to potential customers what they can expect from your services.

Make It Unique: Your tattoo studio’s name should stand out from your competitors. It should be unique and memorable.

Keep It Simple: While you want your name to be unique, it should also be easy to remember, pronounce, and spell. This will make it easier for customers to find you online and recommend you to others.

Use Puns and Wordplay: Leveraging humor and wordplay can be a great way to create something memorable. Whether it’s taking two words and combining them, breaking down one word into two, or creating rhyming styled words, there are plenty of creative ways to use puns and wordplay in your tattoo parlor’s name.

Incorporate Tattoo History or Culture: Look to the past for inspiration. Explore traditional tattoo symbology and their cultural significance, as well as historical trends in the art form. Consider a tattoo shop name that honors an iconic tattoo artist or pays homage to a classic design style. By linking the name to an age-old tradition, you can give your shop a unique character and a story to discuss with customers.

Use Foreign Words or Phrases: Looking beyond English opens up a world of possibilities for creating an interesting and unique name for your tattoo studio. Check out various foreign languages and their cultural contexts, whether it’s Latin, French, German, or Japanese, the options are endless when you explore other cultures through language.

Use a Tattoo Shop Name Generator

If you’re still stuck on name ideas for your new tattoo studio, then using online tools like business name generators can help.

They provide an easy way to choose from a variety of options. You can start by plugging in key words that reflect what you want your shop to be known for, then let the generator work its magic.

Test It Out

Once you have a few potential names, test them out. For this part of the process we suggest three exercises.

Say the names out loud

This exercise is about understanding how your chosen name sounds when spoken. Is it easy to pronounce? Does it roll off the tongue? Remember, your customers will be saying this name when they recommend your services to others.

A name that’s difficult to pronounce or awkward to say might deter word-of-mouth referrals. Consider how it sounds over the phone or in a busy environment. You want a name that can be clearly understood in various contexts.

Write It Down

The next step is to write down your potential tattoo shop names. Visualizing the name in writing can provide a different perspective.

Consider how it will look on a business card, a billboard, or your shop’s front window. Does it catch the eye? Is it easy to read? Does the written form maintain its appeal?

What about the length of the name?. Shorter names are often more memorable and easier to fit on marketing materials.

Gather Feedback

Finally, gathering feedback is an important step when deciding your tattoo parlor’s name. Share your top choices with a diverse group of people. This could include friends, family, or even potential customers.

Ask them for their first impressions. What images or feelings does the name evoke? Is it memorable? Is it easy to spell and pronounce?

You can also conduct a more formal focus group or online survey to gather feedback. This can provide you with more structured and detailed insights.

Remember, the goal is to understand how your name will be perceived by others, as they are the ones who will interact with your brand.

Once you’ve chosen a name for your tattoo shop, it’s important to check if it’s legally available. This means checking if the name is already trademarked or used by another business.

You can do this by conducting a search on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s website or hiring a trademark attorney.

Check Your Tattoo Shop Name Across Online Platforms

In today’s digital age, your tattoo shop’s online presence is just as important as its physical one.

Even if you don’t plan on launching a website immediately, we always recommend securing your shop’s domain name early on, especially once you settle on the perfect name.

The Importance of a Domain Name

The domain name is your tattoo shop’s address on the internet. It’s how customers find you online, learn about your services and get in touch with you.

So, having a domain name that matches your tattoo shop’s name not only strengthens your brand but also makes it easier for customers to find you online.

While there are many Top-Level Domains (TLDs) available today, a ‘.com’ domain is still the most recognized and trusted. If your business is targeted towards a specific country, a country-specific TLD (like ‘.co.uk’ for the UK or ‘.com.au’ for Australia) can also be a good option. It signals to your customers that you are local and can help with local search engine optimization (SEO).

Consistency Across Online Platforms

Consistency is key in branding. Your tattoo studio’s name should be the same across all online platforms, including your website, social media handles, and online directories.

This not only strengthens your brand but also makes it easier for customers to find and recognize you across different platforms.

Checking and Securing Domain Names

Now that you can appreciate the importance of securing your online brand presence, you can understand why it’s important to check if the domain name and social media handles are available, before pulling the trigger on your tattoo shop’s name.

There are several online tools, like domain registrars or domain name search tools, where you can check domain name availability.

My personal go-to source is Namecheap. They have a reliable service with various domains at very reasonable prices. Simply type in your desired name, and these tools will tell you if the domain is available, along with other TLD options.

As already mentioned, we always advise our clients to secure the corresponding domain name immediately once they settle on a name, even if they don’t plan on building a website yet.

Domain names are unique, and once a domain name is taken, it can’t be used by anyone else.

Helpful Tips for Opening a Tattoo Studio

While I’m quite experienced in opening various types of businesses, I can’t really advice on best practices for tattoo shops, however I do recommend you take a look at this video from Tattooing 101 channel.

Real-Life Examples of Effective Tattoo Shop Names

To further illustrate the importance of a well-chosen tattoo shop name, let’s look at some real-life examples of tattoo shops and studios that have effectively used their names to convey their brand and attract their target audience.

High Voltage Tattoo: This is the tattoo shop featured in the TV show ‘LA Ink’. The name “High Voltage” suggests energy, excitement, and a certain edginess, which aligns perfectly with the shop’s location in Hollywood and its celebrity clientele. It’s memorable, easy to pronounce, and it stands out, which are all key characteristics of a good business name.

Miami Ink: Another tattoo shop made famous by a reality TV show, ‘Miami Ink’ uses its location as part of its name. This not only helps with local recognition but also appeals to a sense of pride in the local community. It’s also a very simple name, and easy to remember.

Ink & Dagger Tattoo: This shop uses a common naming convention, the ‘&’ structure, but in a way that’s unique to the tattoo industry. The name suggests a sense of adventure and rebellion, which can be appealing to a certain demographic of customers. It’s also visually interesting, which is important for a business in a visual industry like tattooing.

Sacred Heart Studio: This name evokes a sense of reverence and respect for the art of tattooing. It could appeal to customers looking for a shop that takes its craft seriously. The use of ‘Studio’ in the name also suggests a focus on the artistic side of tattooing.

Black Swan Tattoo: This shop’s name is intriguing and memorable. The ‘Black Swan’ is a symbol of transformation and beauty, which could resonate with customers looking for a tattoo to mark a significant change or event in their lives.

Each of these tattoo shops serve as excellent examples of how a well-chosen name can contribute to a business’s success.

Final Remarks

Choosing the right name for your tattoo shop is part of creating your brand identity. While it can be a challenging process, the effort you put into choosing the right name can pay off in the long run by attracting the right customers.

Remember, your tattoo shop name is more than just a label. It’s a reflection of your artistry, your values, and the unique experience you offer your clients.

By taking time to contemplate what vibes you want your shop’s name to send, you can capture the essence of your brand in a single phrase that will last for years.
