How to Come Up with a Good Hotel Name
When it comes to naming a hotel, there are various factors to consider to ensure your hotel stands out and is remembered for all the right reasons.
In the next part of this post, I will guide you through the process I use to create brand names for my clients. You can follow these tips to come up with a great name for your hotel.
Think about what you want your Hotel’s identity to be
Before you start brainstorming names for your hotel, it’s important to consider your hotel’s brand identity. What is the hotel’s theme and target customers?
Are you launching a luxury resort or a budget-friendly motel? Does it cater to business travelers, or families on vacation?
Knowing what sets you apart from other hotels in your area will help guide you in choosing a fitting name that aligns with the purpose and values of your hotel and which you want your brand to be associated with.
So, start by considering what your hotel’s identity needs to be. You want the name to reflect the mission and vision of your Hotel as much as possible, so you don’t confuse potential customers.
For instance, a luxury resort that caters to high-end travelers could consider a name like “The Grandeur” or “The Regal.” On the other hand, a budget-friendly motel that caters to families on vacation could consider a name like “The Family Inn” or “The Vacationer’s Lodge.” In each of these cases, the name aligns with the hotel’s theme and target clients.
Look at Industry Trends
It’s always good to keep tabs on industry trends when naming your hotel. Look at what other successful hotels and chains are doing and see if there are any common themes or styles that appeal to you. For example, many modern hotels have adopted short and catchy names that are easy to remember.
Start Brainstorming
Once you have a clear understanding of your hotel’s theme and target audience, it’s time to start brainstorming some names.
Don’t complicate it
You want your hotel’s name to stand out and be memorable, but at the same time, it should be easy to spell and pronounce. A name that is too complex or difficult to spell can make it challenging for customers to find your hotel online.
Get Creative
Think about how you want the hotel to make people feel, and what are core values. Then create a list of adjectives and other words that reflect this.
This is an exercise I always do with my clients, as it can help you come up with a good hotel name.
Consider the emotions you want your hotel to evoke. Do you want your hotel to feel cozy and intimate, or do you want it to feel grand and impressive? A name like “The Cozy Retreat” conveys a sense of warmth and comfort, while a name like “The Grand Palace” conveys a sense of luxury and grandeur.
I always recommend that when you are brainstorming names, you get creative. So, for naming a hotel, think of descriptive words such as “luxury,” “boutique,” “cozy,” “chic,” “modern,” etc. You can also use words related to hospitality such as “welcome,” “comfort,” “relaxation,” etc. For more hospitality related words inspiration check this site out.
Combining these words creatively can result in unique and memorable names.
No Idea is Stupid
Now this next tip is very important. When you’re brainstorming name ideas for your hotel, don’t be afraid to let loose and brainstorm with wild abandon.
No idea or word is stupid. If it comes to your mind when doing this exercise then there might be something to it, as your brain is associating this word to your hotel.
So, at this stage, write down every idea that comes into your mind, without reflecting too much about it. You never know which idea might spark inspiration for the perfect name.
Location, Location, Location
Your location can be a great source of uniqueness, and inspiration when naming your hotel. Consider incorporating the name of your city or neighborhood into the name, or using local landmarks or cultural references as inspiration.
This can help create a sense of place and make your hotel more attractive to travelers who want an authentic experience.
For example, the “Waldorf Astoria” in New York City takes its name from its original location on the corner of Park Avenue and 34th Street.
Doing this will help customers to easily identify where your hotel is located and make it easier for them to remember.

You can also look at regional hotel names such as Japanese hotel names like ‘Ryokan’ or hotel names in your local area. This can help inspire you to come up with something memorable and unique for your hotel.

Check if the hotel name is available
Once you have a few hotel names in mind, make sure those names are not already registered or trademarked by another business or company.
To do this, first check the U.S. Patent and Trademark office or similar alternative organizations in the State or country where you will be operating your Hotel.
You are looking for registered names that are the same, or similar to the ideas you have short-listed for your Hotel name.
Next you should check the State Division of Corporations website for DBAs. DBA stands for Doing-Business-As, and it’s a register of all the registered business names in your area.
Verify that the names you are considering for your hotel have not already been used in the same city you will be launching.
You can also easily check online by doing a quick google search of the names you shortlisted. See if the names are already being used as a brand name, social media handle or domain name by someone else.
If so, you should discard that option and move on to the next one until you find something unique and available.
It’s also important to check if there are any other hotels or guest houses in the area with similar names that could confuse potential guests.
Make Sure Domain Name and Social Media Handles are Available
In today’s digital age, it’s crucial to consider your hotel’s domain name and social media handles.
You want to make sure that both the web domain name and the name handles on the most popular social media are available, before finalizing the Hotel name decision.
Remember that branding consistency, across all platforms is key to building a strong brand identity.
My go-to domain name broker is Namecheap. You can check on their website if the domain name you are considering is already available or not.
If your hotel’s name is already taken as a domain name or social media handle, you may need to consider alternative names or variations of your hotel’s name. For example, the “Marriott International” brand uses different variations of its name, such as “Marriott Hotels” and “Marriott Bonvoy,” for its different properties.
Consider registering your Hotel’s name
To protect your brand identity, it is important to register your hotel’s name as a trademark with the proper authorities. This will give you certain rights over the hotel name and prevent other businesses from infringing on your hotel’s identity.
Do some research in advance to know what documents you need and how much it will cost.
